Dartmoor artefacts database entry for the B-17 Flying Fortress crash at Tiger's Marsh on Christmas Day 1943. The aircraft (serial 42-37869) had landed at RAF St Eval in Cornwall after a meteorological reconnaissance sortie and was departing for its base at Cheddington, Hertfordshire.

Serial 42-37869. Pilot attempted to maintain visual contact with the ground on a north-easterly track but entered cloud hanging over the valley. The aircraft struck the hillside, bounced up the slope, and caught fire. The impact area is permanently blackened — the grass has never grown back.

Five crew killed, three survived with injuries. Survivors included crew members who were rescued from the remote moorland location. Crash occurred on Christmas Day 1943.
