Narrative

The PB4Y-1 Liberator was the US Navy's version of the B-24, deployed to RAF Dunkeswell in Devon for anti-submarine operations over the Bay of Biscay. Squadron VB-110 operated these long-range maritime patrol aircraft against German U-boats threatening Allied Atlantic convoys. On 28 December 1943, Liberator 63926 was in transit when it encountered poor visibility over Dartmoor. The aircraft flew into the steep-sided West Okement Valley, crashing between the Slipper Stones and Steng-a-Tor on the western side, opposite the south end of Black-a-Tor Copse. All ten crew members were killed instantly. The crash site is remote and remains littered with wreckage fragments. Though this is a US Navy rather than RAF Bomber Command aircraft, it represents the broader Allied bomber operations that used Devon bases extensively.
