Wellington X3336 took off from RAF Pershore at 1838 on 16 December 1942 on a navigation exercise and crashed on Longside Edge on Skiddaw at approximately 2325. The crew had missed a turn point, possibly over Lancaster, and were about 40 miles off track over high ground when the bomber struck the ridge top and exploded.

The crew included F/Sgt Reginald Bellew (pilot), P/O Anthony Higgins RCAF (navigator), P/O Ronald Goodwin (navigator), Sgt Arthur Dubben (observer), Sgt George Hicks (W/Op AG), and Sgt Richard Lawton RCAF (air gunner). Only fragments and .303 ammunition remain at the site.
