Detailed account of Halifax BB310's crash into Blea Crag on Great Dun Fell on 12 April 1944. The aircraft was from 1674 HCU at RAF Longtown and had been airborne for eight and a half hours on a cross-country night navigation exercise when it struck the fell.
BB310 was originally a Coastal Command aircraft with 502 Squadron. Built by LAPG as a Mk.II Series 1 between November 1942 and January 1943. Low cloud covering the north-west coast contributed to the crew overflying their base. The impact created a visible crater in the scree rocks.
