What Happened

Stirling BK770 of 75 (NZ) Squadron departed Newmarket on operations on 10 April 1943, with Warrant Officer Walsh at the controls. The aircraft came down at Bressingham, Norfolk, and all seven crew members were killed. Walsh, a New Zealander aged 27, flew alongside Navigator Flight Sergeant Bertram Augustus Moffatt, Air Bomber Sergeant Francis Henry Reddicliffe, Wireless Operator Sergeant John William Scudder, Flight Engineer Sergeant Jack Herbert Worthington, Mid Upper Gunner Sergeant Stanley Arthur Curtis, and Rear Gunner Sergeant Phillip Gordon Stuart. The youngest member of the crew, Sergeant Worthington, was 19 years old.

Stirling Mk.III BK770 arrived with 75(NZ) Squadron on 2 April 1943 and was lost on 8 April during an operation to Duisburg. A brief W/T distress signal was received at 01:10hrs before the aircraft crashed at Valley Farm, Bressingham, Norfolk, exploding on impact. This was the first Mk III Stirling written off by 75(NZ) Squadron.
