What Happened

Flying from RAF Hethel with the 389th Bombardment Group, 1st Lieutenant James Edward Rhine piloted B-24J Liberator "Old Glory" on 21 November 1944. The aircraft was lost in a mid-air collision over Norfolk, an event also linked that same day to the loss of a second B-24J known as "Earthquake McGoon." "Old Glory" came down near Carleton Rode, Norfolk. Lieutenant Rhine was killed; he is the sole crew member documented in surviving records for this aircraft.
