What Happened

On the night of 27–28 September 1943, the crew of Lancaster W4904 departed Faldingworth airfield at 20:10 hours on a Bullseye training exercise with the 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit. The flight required them to navigate to a British city and conduct a simulated bombing run, testing both aircrew and ground-based tracking personnel. Four hours into the flight, the aircraft was approaching the western side of York in cloud when severe icing conditions compromised its control surfaces. It is believed Flying Sergeant Adam Mullen lost control of the aircraft as a result. All seven crew members were killed: Douglas Roy Brown, Reginald Eric Butler, Arthur Howell, Adam William Joseph Mullen, Martin Raymond Pearce, Lawrence Richard William Turley, and Roger Pickering Weston. Mullen, an American serving with the RCAF, was from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.
