The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1996. It is the only structure left standing near the hypocentre of the atomic bomb detonated on 6 August 1945, preserved in its post-explosion condition as a symbol of peace and nuclear disarmament.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum provides the official interpretive context for the Genbaku Dome and the broader peace memorial park. Three conservation projects (1967, 1989-1990, 2002-2003) have used minimal reinforcement to preserve the dome's condition.
