What Happened
Whitley Z6576 of 102 Squadron, coded DY-?, departed Topcliffe at 2224 on 26 July 1941 for Hannover. The aircraft was intercepted at 2200m over the North Sea, 10km west of De Kooy, by Oberleutnant Egmont Prinz zur Lippe-Weissenfeld of IV/NJG1, his 11th claim. The memorial in Hamble-le-Rice commemorates an eminent British aircraft engineer (possibly Sir Edwin Alliott Verdon-Roe, founder of Avro — verify) and his two sons, both killed in WWII, one of whom was aboard Z6576.
