What Happened
Wellington BK542 of 12 Operational Training Unit departed Chipping Warden in the early hours of 4 March 1945 on Operation Sweepstake — a mission in which training crews dropped Window (chaff) over the Bay of Biscay as a diversion to draw the Luftwaffe's attention from the main Bomber Command operation that night. The last radio call from BK542 was at 2337, reporting one engine stopped and the aircraft losing height west of the Scilly Isles. Nothing further was heard. The aircraft was lost on the same night as Operation Gisela, the Luftwaffe's retaliatory intruder raid over Britain. The crew are presumed to have come down in the sea.
Sgt Francis John Burton of Ty-Canol, Tywyn is commemorated on the town's war memorial.
