What Happened

On the night of 27-28 April 1942, two aircraft were lost attacking the German battleship Tirpitz at anchor in Fættenfjord. Halifax W1020 of 35 Squadron, coded TL-K, had departed Kinloss at 2035. It was probably damaged by Flak and may have been heading for Sweden when it struck the mountainside. Lancaster L7572 of 97 Squadron, coded OF-L, had departed Lossiemouth. It was hit by shore and ship Flak and crashed close to where W1020 came down.

All six crew of W1020 were killed; all seven crew of L7572 were killed. The memorial at Skjekstadmarka commemorates all 13 airmen with individual stones.
