Round tablet: N3703 - G FOR GOBLIN XV SQUADRON Tablet: Saturday 11th April 1942 Short Stirling N3703 'G for Goblin' At 4.35am the XV Squadron Stirling, having returned badly damaged from a raid on Essen, and having aborted a landing at RAF Alconbury, crashed in a field close to this Memorial. Squadron Leader Drummond Wilson and Mid Upper Gunner Sergeant Edgar Gould lost their lives in the crash. Of the six who survived that day, three would not live to see VE day. This memorial honours their sacrifice, and all those who flew with XV Squadron, and recognises the service they gave to their country in its time of need. [crew names listed on memorial] 'To fly through cloud, through storm, through night. Unerring, and to keep their purpose bright Nor turn, until their dreadful duty done, Westward they climb, to race the awakened sun'
