What Happened

On the night of 1 September 1942, Halifax BB216 of 405 (Vancouver) Squadron took off from Topcliffe, Yorkshire, bound for Saarbrücken, Germany. After crossing the English coast, the aircraft developed engine trouble; the engines caught fire, and the captain, Flight Sergeant Norman McKenzie RCAF, ordered his crew of seven to bail out. The bomber came down at Langham, near Mumby in Lincolnshire. Four crew members were killed: pilot Flight Sergeant Norman McKenzie, aged 27, along with Flight Sergeant Clarence Eagles, Flight Sergeant Louis Dawdy, aged 20, and Sergeant Harold Stone. Three others survived, including at least one who sustained injuries.

Detailed account of Halifax II BB216 (LQ:D) from 405 (Vancouver) Squadron RCAF. The aircraft took off from RAF Topcliffe at 2303 on 1 September 1942 for a bombing mission to Saarbrucken. After crossing the coast at 2344, the port outer engine caught fire; though the blaze was extinguished, structural failure of the port wing followed and the order to bail out was given. At least two airmen fell into the sea and drowned. The Halifax crashed at 2358 near Chapel St Leonards.
