What Happened
Wellington HF601, coded HD-?, of 466 (RAAF) Squadron departed RAF Leconfield at 22:11 on the night of 5 July 1943, tasked with Operation Gardening — the RAF's codename for minelaying operations. HF601 was one of the Wellington crews detailed to seed sea mines in the Brest approaches, a strategically important channel used by German shipping off the Brittany coast.
The crew was a composite assembled from across 4 Group. Wing Commander Owen flew as pilot in command, attached to 466 Squadron from 4 Group Headquarters. The remaining four — Swain, Darbyshire, Long, and Ray — were attached from 196 Squadron. This mixing of experienced aircrew from different units was not unusual for operational minelaying sorties, where seniority and specific skill requirements could draw men temporarily from their parent squadrons.
Approaching the Brest peninsula in the early hours of 6 July, HF601 was caught by coastal anti-aircraft defences near Le Conquet — the westernmost point of the French mainland, at the entrance to the roadstead of Brest. A direct flak hit disabled the aircraft at approximately 01:30. HF601 crashed into the sea close to shore, killing all five men.
The bodies were recovered after washing up on Plage de Pors Liogan, a small beach in the commune of Le Conquet. Local French civilians and the German occupation authorities were responsible for their initial burial in the sand. On 8 July 1943 — two days after the crash — the five airmen were transported to the cemetery at Magueur/Lochrist and interred with German military honours, a practice observed in some occupied territories during this period.
Of the five men, four were subsequently identified and now rest in Le Conquet Communal Cemetery: Wing Commander Owen in individual Grave 4, and Flying Officers Swain, Pilot Officer Long, and Pilot Officer Ray together in Collective Grave 1–3. Flying Officer Frank Darbyshire, the bomb aimer, was never positively identified. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 124, alongside more than 20,000 aircrew of the RAF with no known grave.
