On the Morning of 18 July 1944, 21 Halifax Mk Biii Bombers of 578 Squadron Royal Air Force Took Off from Burn in North Yorkshire to Attack Fortified Villages Near Caen in France. On the Outward Flight Lk-q Developed a Fire Which the Crew Were Unable to Control. The Pilot Managed to Avoid the Heavily Populated Areas of Reading and Maidenhead Before the Aircraft Exploded and Plunged into This Wood. Miraculously the Canadian Rear Gunner Managed to Parachute to Safety but the Rest of the Crew Were Lost Without Trace. Their Names, Which Are Recorded at the RAF Memorial to the Missing at Runnymede Are [crew names listed on memorial] Tread Softly Here for This Is Hallowed Ground
