What Happened
Wellington Z1392 departed Hemswell on 3 February 1943 and was shot down by a Bf 110 F-4 of NJG1 from Leeuwarden, piloted by Oberleutnant Alois Ott. Four Polish crew were killed: Edward Lesisz (navigator/observer, aged 32), Henryk Leon Gzell (bomb aimer, aged 22), Alfons Kowalski (wireless operator, aged 23), and Bernard Kozlowski (rear gunner, aged 28). The pilot, Mieczysław Seredyn (aged 22), was the sole survivor; he was seriously injured, reached Drogeham, and was treated by a pro-German GP who handed him to the occupying forces.
