Narrative

The parish of Clenchwarton, situated in the flat marshland near King's Lynn on Norfolk's western edge, witnessed an extraordinary concentration of wartime aircraft crashes. Its position beneath the approach paths to several Norfolk bomber stations -- including nearby RAF Marham and the Fens airfields -- made it tragically vulnerable to aircraft in distress. The most significant RAF Bomber Command incidents were the loss of Short Stirling W7473 from 218 Squadron on 23 April 1942, which crashed into Ingrams Field, and Halifax HR832 from 405 (Vancouver) Squadron RCAF on 16 June 1943, which came down at Clifton Farm. The Halifax was from the Canadian Pathfinder squadron based at Gransden Lodge in Cambridgeshire, far from its home base, indicating the aircraft was likely in serious trouble and seeking any available landing ground. In total, six separate aircraft crashes occurred within the parish boundaries during the war years, killing nineteen aircrew. The variety of aircraft types -- Stirling, Halifax, Mosquito, Hurricane, and Oxford -- reflects the diversity of operations passing over this corner of Norfolk. It was not until the year 2000 that the parish formally recognised this grim toll with a dedicated memorial.

Halifax HR832 was carrying out a routine cross country training flight when the crew encountered a severe electrical storm. Before emerging into clear weather the Halifax was struck by lightning.

The aircraft then hit turbulence and HR832 began to break up. Three crew members were killed on impact and the others seriously injured when the aircraft struck high ground and burst into flames at 19.05 hrs at Clifton farm, some two miles west of Kings Lynn.

(2) Fl/Sgt. Clinton Landis Pudney survived an earlier crash, on the 28th January 1943 whilst with 1659 HCU in another Halifax W1146.
