Narrative

On 19 September 1944, Liberator EV881 of 547 Squadron, RAF Coastal Command, took off from St Eval in Cornwall on a coastal patrol. The squadron's primary role was anti-submarine warfare over the Western Approaches. En route to an exercise area off Anglesey, the Liberator encountered cloud over the Preseli Hills in northern Pembrokeshire. The aircraft flew into Carn Bica at approximately 1,700 feet. Six of the nine-strong crew were killed; three survivors were all badly burned. The crew included both British and Canadian personnel, including Warrant Officer Soroski of the RCAF. This was a rare operational (rather than training) loss in the Welsh mountains, as the aircraft was engaged in Coastal Command duties rather than an OTU exercise. Flight Engineer Raymond Sellors was 21 years old.
