What Happened
On the night of 22 November 1943, two Halifax bombers returning from an operation over Germany were in the holding pattern above the East Yorkshire countryside, waiting their turn to land. At 23:55, Halifax LW333 (DY-K) of 102 (Ceylon) Squadron, based at RAF Pocklington, and Halifax LW264 (KN-K) of 77 Squadron, based at RAF Elvington, collided above Mohair Farm, Barmby on the Moor. Both aircraft came down on or near the farm. All fourteen men on board — seven from each crew — were killed. The collision was one of several tragic accidents that befell Bomber Command crews not over enemy territory, but in the dark skies above their own airfields as they orbited, exhausted, waiting to land. More than twenty relatives of the crew attended the ceremony.
Community Connection
Fiona Rosevear, great niece of Sgt John Boxall, of Walton-on-Thames, discovered her family's connection to the crash through genealogy research and through the 102 Squadron Association — one of many families who found each other in the process of building the memorial.
