Crest: BOMBER COMMAND ROYAL AIR FORCE STRIKE HARD STRIKE SURE Inscription: On the night of 17 December 1942, a Lancaster bomber (coded SR-N; serial no. W4319) of 101 Squadron, Holme-on-Spalding Moor crashed 200 yards west of this point. The aircraft, which was returning from an operation off the North German coast, was off course and was unable to identify itself because its identification apparatus (IFF) was not working. The Lancaster crossed the coast just north of Redcar during an attack on the Tees area. In the absence of IFF, a Bofors anti- aircraft gun crew based at Warrenby Works assumed that the Lancaster was a raider and shot it down. There were no survivors amongst the crew of seven.
