At 16:05 Hours on 7th October 1942, and RAF Wellington Bomber Passed Low Over This Place. On a Routine Training Flight, It Ran into Difficulty Soon After Take Off from RAF Wymeswold. As the Crew Fought to Keep the Aircraft in the Air It Was Seen Passing Lowover the Roof of Beaumanor Hall, Jettisoning Fuel as It Went. Eywitnesses Saw It Clipa Treetop and Narrowly Miss the Steeple of St Mary in the Elms Church Before Coming Down Nearby. Workmen from Beaumanor, Passengers from a Passing Bus and Villagers Ran to Give Assistence, but the Aircraft Was Soon Engulfed in Flames and Exploding Munitions. The Valient Crew of Three Were All Lost. [crew names listed on memorial] in Greatful Remembrance from Local People; Went the Day Well? We Died and Never Knew, But, Well or ILL, Freedom, We Died for You
